[Medicinal Use] This product is the rhizome of Rheum palmatum or Rheum officinale of the Polygonaceae family.
[Nature and flavor and meridians] Bitter, cold. Enters the spleen, stomach, large intestine, pericardium, and liver meridians.

Rhubarb has laxative and clears stagnation, so it can be used for constipation and stagnation diarrhea, tenesmus, loose stools and discomfort; and because it can be bitter and cold to relieve heat and cleanse the stagnation of the stomach and intestines, it can play a role in clearing heat and purging fire for symptoms of heat-stagnation constipation, high fever and coma, which belong to the symptoms of real heat stagnation. The dried root and root product of Rheum tanquticum Maxim.ex Balf, or medicinal rhubarb Rheum officinale Bail, is the stem of Rheum palmatum, a plant of the Polygonaceae family. It is dug up in late autumn when the stems and leaves wither or before germination in the next spring, the fine roots are removed, the outer skin is scraped off, the petals or segments are cut, and the product is strung into strings or dried directly.

This product is cylindrical, conical, oval or irregular in shape, 3~17cm long and 3~10cm in diameter. (1) Cross-section of this product: the root cork layer and the inner cork layer have mostly been removed. The phloem sieve tube group is obvious; the parenchyma is well-developed. The cambium is annular. The xylem rays are dense, 2 to 4 rows of cells wide, containing brown
substances; the vessels are non-lignified, often 1 to several clusters, sparsely arranged. The parenchyma cells contain clusters of calcium oxalate crystals and many starch grains.
The rhizome pith is broad, and mucus cavities are often found in it, with reddish-brown substances; the heteromorphic vascular bundles are scattered, the cambium is annular, the xylem is located outside the cambium, the phloem is located inside the cambium, and the rays are emitted in a star shape.
The powder is yellow-brown. The diameter of calcium oxalate crystals is 20~160um, and some are up to 190um. The vessels with margins, reticular vessels, spiral vessels and annular vessels are non-lignified. There are many starch grains, single grains are spherical or polygonal, with a diameter of 3~45um and a star-shaped umbilicus; compound grains are composed of 2~8 sub-grains.
(2) Take a small amount of powder of this product and perform micro-sublimation, and rhombic needle crystals or feather-shaped crystals can be seen.
(3) Take 0.1g of powder of this product, add 20ml of methanol, soak for 1 hour, filter, take 5ml of filtrate, evaporate to dryness, add 10ml of water to the residue to dissolve, add 1ml of hydrochloric acid, heat and reflux for 30 minutes, cool immediately, and extract with ether twice by shaking, 20ml each time, combine the ether solution, evaporate to dryness, and add 1ml of chloroform to the residue to dissolve, as the test solution. Take 0.1g of rhubarb control medicinal material and prepare the control medicinal material solution in the same way. Take the rhein reference substance and add methanol to make a solution containing 1 mg per 1 ml as the reference solution. According to the thin layer chromatography method (General Rule 0502), take 44 l of each of the above three solutions and spot them on the same silica gel H thin layer plate with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the adhesive, and use the upper layer solution of petroleum ether (30~60℃)-ethyl formate-formic acid (15:5:1) as the developing agent, develop, take out, dry and inspect under ultraviolet light (365nm). In the chromatogram of the test product, the same five orange-yellow fluorescent main spots appear at the corresponding positions of the chromatogram of the reference medicinal material: the same orange-yellow fluorescent spots appear at the corresponding positions of the chromatogram of the reference substance, and the spots turn red after being fumigated with ammonia vapor.

The moisture content shall not exceed 15.0% (General Rule 0832 Method 2).
